MARIAN JONES
Marian Jones was born July 15, 1909, the daughter of
Howard R. and Maude Lehr Moon. She has
lived almost her entire life in the house where she was born on Russia
Road. Her great great grandfather
settled in the Town of Russia in 1802.
She married in 1935, has two sons, William and Edward, four
grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She was salutatorian of Poland High School, Class of
1926. After receiving a teaching degree
from Oneonta State and continuing her education at Albany State she taught the
primary grades at the Cold Brook Union School from 1929 to 1935. From 1945 to 1951 she taught at North Gage's
one room schoolhouse. From 1952 until her
retirement in 1972 she taught in Poland's elementary school.
She is a 70-year member of the Eastern Star and Past
Matron. She is also a member of Poland
Retired Teachers, Kuyahoora Minutemen, Kanata Garden Club, Kuyahoora Senior
Citizens, Russia Civic Association, and served as treasurer of the Russia Union
Church. Marian has been very active in
the restoration and maintenance of the church and schoolhouse. She is well known at area bake sales for her
homemade pies.
Marian thinks the best thing about living in the
Town is the weather. She feels we miss
the worst of it-that someplace else always gets the tornadoes, hurricanes,
blizzards, etc. Her advice is also the
motto she lives by-make life pleasant for everyone and get along with people.
Mrs. Jones feels her greatest accomplishment is
living to be 91 but a description of Marian in her 1926 yearbook best describes
her-"Marian is not boastful but rather prone to lessen her own ability in
the eyes of others."
