DON DIXON

Don Dixon was born February 18, 1932 in Bainbridge, New York, the son of Howard and Ruth Dixon. He lived in Afton until his father was transferred to Poland to manage the G.L.F. Store.

He graduated from Tri-State College in Indiana with a degree in civil engineering. After marrying Joan McVoy in 1953 he served two years with the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Don then worked for Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Maryland for almost two years. That was enough city life for a small town lad so he and Joan moved back to New York State, settling in Holland Patent

In 1958 they moved to the Town of Russia with their young family of daughter Dawn and twins Linda and Laura. That was also the year he began employment with the New York State Department of Transportation, a position he held until his retirement in 1994.

He built his present home on Route 28 in 1968 where he enjoys rural living, watching deer and turkeys meander across his lawn.

Don has always been very involved in school, church, and community affairs. He served on the Poland School Board of Education for almost 20 years until 1985, several years as president. He spent many hours in the early 1970’s securing an addition to the school.

He was a member of the Poland Civic Club, the Poland Centennial Committee of 1990, the Community Baptist Church Men’s Club, and a church trustee. Don has done many repairs and odd jobs at the Poland Public Library. For several years he and his friends put up the Christmas tree by the village fountain.

He is presently a member of Kuyahoora Historical Society and Kuyahoora Senior Citizens.

Since 1999 Don has been a driver for Kuyahoora Ambulance Corps serving many hours caring for the ill and injured of the community.

Rural life is what he appreciates most about living in the Town of Russia. Here you can still enjoy "life in the slow lane. Everything is so fast lane now. The Town is a great place to raise children."

Don was brought up in a small town and has always appreciated small town life. He was very glad to move away from the hustle and bustle of big city living when he resided in Baltimore, Maryland for almost two years.

His advice is, "Don’t forget where you come from. Don’t let the world get ahead of you."

People like Don are essential to the Town of Russia maintaining its high quality of rural living. He is a well-respected individual who because of his fondness for rural living has made the Town a better place for all its residents.
